Making The Most Of Your Assistant Psychologist Role
Share Knowledge!
I can't stress this enough. Whether it's asking questions or psychologists, psychotherapists, other assistants, near enough everyone you meet is so passionate about psychology too that they want to talk about it and share their knowledge and resources. Take advantage of the lunch time and between session chats.
Want To Do Something? Ask!
Want to observe session? Ask!
Want to get more research experience? Ask!
Want to start a workshop/group? Ask!
Trust me there are always opportunities to be had and sometimes something new is created just for you, you just simply need to ask. For example I took to supervision that I'd like more research experience and my supervisor looked into what I could do that would help with that. I know it isn't always possible but as the saying goes "if you don't ask, you don't get".
Get Creative/ Make Your Mark!
Why not design some resources, leaflets, groups or workshops for your service? This is a great way to do something creative, learn a topic and to create something that will continue to be used even after your contract finishes (sorry me genralising as I know most AP roles are fixed term contracts).
Make The Most Of Training!
Make the most of any training and CPD offered to you. There can be some amazing opportunities that come with AP roles in the way of training and CPD. There's also no harm in looking online for CPD that interests you and if it links to your role your employer may allow you time out of the work day to attend it.
Connect!
Getting an AP role can often open up a world of doors and with that can come AP networks for your trust or service. Make the most of these opportunities to vent with other APs, share resources, share knowledge and get support from your peers.
